Kelly's Flag

I used to be rather anti-gay.

I told hateful jokes. I sneered, laughed, ranted. I used many of the pejorative labels like faggot and queer. I can recall a time nearly 10 years ago where I argued the point that gay people have chosen to be gay because they enjoy the attention.

Boy was I a jerk.

I recently got back in touch with my fraternity brother, Kelly Stern, who came out of the closet since I had last spoken to him. I remember him as a kind, interesting, fun person who everyone wanted to be around, yet he was always rather private. I'd almost call him shy. All the college women thought he was dreamy (imagine that). I genuinly liked him back then, and although we haven't been in touch much over the past 13 years, I still do.

When I found out that Kelly was gay, I remembered regretfully those old, immature opinions I once so loudly and ignorantly proclaimed. I would have never said them to Kelly.

I've grown up, and in the process have come to realize that one doesn't have to be gay to empathize with and relate to gay people. I understand now that people don't choose to be gay, but rather choose whether or not to live truthfully. I'm glad Kelly is living his life happily and truthfully, and I'm happy he's found someone he loves to share it with.

I visit Kelly's blog often to see what he's up to. He kindly frequents my blog as well. Kelly recently posted a challenge to readers of his blog to post this picture in as many places as possible in support of Gay Pride Month. This is something he cares a lot about, so, for you, Kelly; here is my support!

  • Mike...
What an incredible friend you are. It's funny how a bit of time seems to enlighten some and Kelly is lucky that you are won of those few willing to open your heart. I hope my journey is like his. While Kel came out late in his eyes and I am coming out much much later. Makes me hope and believe that just maybe my journey won't be all that rough.

  • Mike and Kelly -

Like your experiences (I assume), my fraternity days were great ... the most memorable times of college. Little did anyone know at the time, but our house was full of "diversity" too. But the respect we gained for our brothers then has become the foundation for life-long friendships based on acceptance of individual differences. I think it's great that you're enjoying each other's blogs.
